Mi Shebeirach Tapestry 2008 – The Green Edition!

tapestry tile martha

We are dedicating this year’s Healing Tapestry Project to Healing the Planet.  We want to celebrate our responsibility to maintain the health and life force of our natural world with squares that celebrate this theme.

The healing tapestry is constructed of individual squares that are assembled initially for use in the Yom Kippur service. If you can volunteer your time to create a special square for this tapestry, we need them completed no later than August 25th. Thank you!

  1. Select a theme: In expressing your ideas, hopes and prayers creatively, remember the four R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle, rebuy recycling info. ). We would like the materials in your project to have had a previous life, perhaps from special life events in your family. Use items reclaimed from another use to be made holy by your loving and creative work.
    1. Your square may be inspired by your experiences in the natural world,
    2. Your hopes and dreams for a healthy future for our planet, for Israel, for the Jewish people and the world, Or
    3. You may choose to make a square for the memory, healing, or celebration of someone or something, using previously-used materials.
  2. Design your square: Sketch your design inside a 9 ” x 9 ” square
  3. Build your Design: Start with a single square piece of fabric that is 11” x 11.” (You must leave a one inch border around all edges.) This will be your foundation. You can sew fabric, buttons, etc., embroider, and/or use paint, markers or crayons that are for use on fabric.
    1. If you are using additional pieces of fabric in your design, cut them out of your recycled materials, leaving at least ¼” for a seam around the edges of each piece. [Tip: The easiest way to get an accurate cut is with a rotary cutter on a self-healing mat.]
    2. Sew a seam around the edge of each design piece.
    3. Sew the pieces onto your 11” square, remembering to leave the 1” border around the edges of your square
  4. When you have finished your square please share your interpretation and inspiration by writing your thoughts in a statement.
  5. Please submit your square and statement to the Shalom Center, by August 25th, 2008 at the latest.
