Resolutions for a Green Year
Nona Siegal and Stephanie Schlossmacher made these resolutions with their families.
Eat Responsibly and Healthy:
- Buy Organic:
- Apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach, and strawberries have the highest concentration of pesticide residue (USDA, www.foodnews.org)
- Meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy: Minimize exposure to potential toxins in nonorganic feed and avoid the results of production methods that use daily supplemental hormones and antibiotics, which have been linked to increased antibacterial resistance in humans. (Consumer Reports ”When it Pays to Buy Organic”)
- Eat More Locally Grown Food:
- Fresher, tastier, and reduced pollution because it didn’t have to travel half-way around the world
- Create a garden as a family project
- Eat Fish that is sustainably grown and is low in Mercury

Simplify:
Save:
- Save water
- Turn off the water when you brush your teeth, take shorter showers, scrape your dishes (don’t rinse unless you have to) before putting them in the dishwasher
- Reduse, resuse, recycle, and rebuy
- Choose stainless steel or similar bottles that you can safely wash and refill. Bring your own mug to your neighborhood coffee shop.
- Turn down extra napkins and plastic ware when you order take out
- Visit your local thrift shops and check out the online used item markets for goods that you need
- Donate used electronics to non-profits, such as worldcare.org, who refurbish the items and donate them to needy communities in the U.S. and throughout the world.
